Developing Pineapple Products in Penampi

Penampi residents are developing processed pineapple products to diversify the use of local agricultural produce.

Penampi is one of the villages supplying pineapples to Bengkalis Island and surrounding areas. At the time of reporting, pineapple cultivation covered 61 hectares in this predominantly peatland village in Bengkalis District.

Samrizal, aged 31, explained that not all pineapples command high market prices. Processing can increase their economic value and shelf life. Through the village-owned enterprise he manages, residents have developed pineapple dodol, syrup and crackers.

Penampi pineapple products: dodol, syrup and crackers

Pineapple Dodol

Samrizal uses small pineapples that sell cheaply in the fresh market. He can produce 25 kg of dodol monthly, priced at Rp 69,000 per 1 kg or Rp 35,000 per half-kilogram. The packaged product is reported to keep for up to 2 months.

Pineapple Syrup

Syrup is packaged in 250 ml bottles and sold for Rp 13,000 per bottle.

Pineapple Crackers

Ready-to-eat pineapple crackers are sold in packets for Rp 10,000 each.

The products are marketed online and through the Bengkalis Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) stand.

“We hope consumers will choose Penampi’s pineapple products as distinctive gifts from Bengkalis, and that government and other partners will help market products from this crop, which grows well on peatland,” Samrizal told Yayasan Gambut on Monday, 23/11/20.
