To commemorate World Mangrove Day, Riau Governor H. Syamsuar and Bengkalis Regent Kasmarni launched an initiative to plant 200,000 mangrove seedlings and inaugurated the Riau Provincial Mangrove Working Group (KKMD) at Kuala Sungai Sekat Bakau, Buruk Bakul Village, Bukit Batu District, Bengkalis Regency, on Tuesday, 26 July 2022.
“We hope this mangrove planting initiative will be a strategic step towards giving greater attention to the environment and developing mangrove products with high economic value,” Kasmarni said in her remarks.
She explained that coastal erosion was among the Bengkalis Regency Government’s highest priorities and had also attracted national attention because of its significant effects on local communities.
Governor H. Syamsuar stated that Riau was committed to mangrove conservation.
“Riau has extensive mangroves covering approximately 224 thousand hectares. I am grateful that we are not working alone. We work with communities, community organisations, academics, the private sector and environmental NGOs,” he said.
He added that mangrove conservation requires support from all parties. The provincial KKMD programme represents the Riau Government’s commitment to that work.
“This will help us achieve our shared aspiration for a Green Riau,” Syamsuar said.
Both the Governor and Regent extended World Mangrove Day greetings and affirmed their commitment to regional development, particularly mangrove restoration.
Those attending included Riau Environment and Forestry Office Head Ma’mun Murod; Riau Village Community Empowerment Office Head Djoko Edy Imhar; and Andris Wasono, Bengkalis Regional Secretariat Assistant for Government and People’s Welfare.
Other participants included Bukit Batu District Head Acil Esyno, Bandar Laksamana District Head Taufik Hidayat, village heads and village-owned enterprise directors from Bukit Batu, Sofyan Said of the Bengkalis Malay Customary Institution, Sekat Bakau Chair Kaidir, MERA Director Imron and other invited guests.
