Resilient coasts

Mangroves and Coasts

Site-based mangrove restoration with communities to strengthen coastal protection, biodiversity, and livelihoods.

Caring for coasts together

This program aims to restore mangrove ecological functions while strengthening the ability of community groups to plan, implement, maintain, and monitor long-term coastal restoration.

Focus areas

  • Site assessment and restoration planning.
  • Community nurseries, planting, adaptive replanting, and support for natural regeneration where appropriate.
  • Maintenance and monitoring of vegetation, shorelines, and sedimentation.
  • Stronger community management groups and livelihoods compatible with mangrove protection.

How we work and what we track

Each site is mapped and documented according to its baseline condition, intervention type, implementation date, and responsible group. Monitoring covers the location and extent of intervention areas, species and numbers planted, seedling survival and growth, vegetation condition, shoreline or sediment change where data are available, and community participation and preparedness.

Examples from Yayasan Gambut

Community-based mangrove conservation is being implemented in Buruk Bakul, Kelapa Pati, and Sepahat in Bengkalis Regency, and Tanjung Kuras in Siak Regency. Activities include community nurseries, planting and maintenance, periodic monitoring, adaptive replanting, and site-appropriate coastal protection.
