Developing Liberica coffee in Pedekik begins with knowledge of seeds, nursery management, and peatland conditions. On 17 June 2026, Yayasan Gambut held coffee sowing and nursery training at the Pedekik Village Office, Bengkalis Sub-district, Bengkalis Regency, in collaboration with Yayasan Bahtera Melayu.

The activity ran from 08:00 to 16:30 and involved 36 participants: 26 men and ten women. They represented the Pedekik Lestari community group, village and sub-district government, Mapala Laksamana, and local residents.

Nurseries as a foundation for agroforestry

The training addressed the need for technical knowledge to prepare Liberica coffee planting material. Seed quality and seedling care are important parts of village-level coffee development. Within the programme, Pedekik is intended to develop a community nursery without additional land clearing.

Acting Village Head Syaiful Anwar and Bengkalis Sub-district Head Rafli Kurniawan opened the activity. Both emphasised collaboration, quality planting material, and agricultural development suited to local potential.

Connecting technical knowledge with community experience

Raja Alpian of Yayasan Gambut and Tuti Kelana of Kelompok Tani Wanita Makmur Jaya delivered the sessions. Topics included coffee seed selection and preparation, sowing techniques, and seedling maintenance. These were connected with peatland management, zero-burning practices, water management, and agroforestry.

Presentations, discussion, questions and answers, and examples from community experience supported the training. Participation by a resource person from a women’s farming group gave attendees an opportunity to learn from farming experience at the community level.

Towards community nursery management

This was the first field activity under the agroforestry component of the Sustainable Peatland Management and Community Livelihood Strengthening (SPM–CLS) programme. Yayasan Gambut and the Global Environment Centre implement the programme in Bengkalis and Siak from May 2026 to February 2027.

Planned follow-up includes nursery establishment, field mentoring, seedling maintenance, and preparation for coffee planting within agroforestry systems. The aim is to help groups apply their learning, from producing planting material to preparing for crop management on their farms.

For Pedekik, the activity connects agricultural skills with peatland stewardship. Coffee development is discussed alongside zero-burning practices and water management, linking livelihood opportunities with attention to the condition of the land.
