Fire Danger Information Boards for Peatland Communities

Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) information boards help communities understand risks and prepare for fires.

YayasanGambut (YG) ·

This FDRS aims to monitor the risk of forest and peatland fires and provide early warnings through real-time indicators using water level data at the location. The information displayed on the FDRS board is expected to function as an Early Warning System (EWS).

Development of FDRS in Tanjung Kuras Village

The installation of the FDRS Information Board in Tanjung Kuras Village was carried out by the BELATRAM community group, the installation process is located in Dusun 3, which is a connecting access between hamlets and in a location prone to fires. The installation point was chosen because it can be monitored by many people who are active in going to the plantation (palm oil, pineapple) so that the dissemination and information process can be seen by many people.

Development of FDRS in Simpang Ayam Village

The installation of the FDRS Information Board in Simpang Ayam Village was carried out by the Simpang Ayam Fire Care Community Representative, LINMAS Simpang Ayam Village, and the Paghet Seghagah group. This activity also collaborated with Yayasan Bahtera Melayu, which is a local NGO in Bengkalis Regency. The FDRS installation was installed next to the gate leading to the Simpang Ayam village beach tourist area, and this location is also located in a palm oil plantation which is prone to drought and fire. This access is also passed by fishermen who enter and exit and local rubber and palm oil farmers, so the presence of FDRS can become information that can be monitored by the general public.

This initiative is part of the effort to prevent forest and peatland fires, and refers to the lessons from the Sustainable Management of Peatland Ecosystems in Indonesia (SMPEI) Project. The SMPEI project, which is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has successfully developed an innovative approach to sustainable peatland ecosystem management. One of the significant achievements of this project is the development of an effective peatland fire early warning system, which becomes a reference in the installation of FDRS.
