Program Activities
Developing Liberica Coffee with the Stewards of Ghimbo Pamoan Customary Forest
Following the initial planting of 100 Liberica coffee seedlings, activities continued with plant monitoring and nursery preparations in Ghimbo Pamoan Customary Forest.

Liberica coffee development in Ghimbo Pamoan Customary Forest, Kampar Regency, continued with plant monitoring and preparations for nursery activities. On 5 October 2026, Yayasan Gambut and members of the customary forest management body (LPHA) inspected the coffee planted during the initial activity and discussed bringing the nursery back into use.
These activities form part of a programme supported by MA Earth. Coffee development aims to create livelihood opportunities while maintaining the forest’s ecological functions and cultural significance for the Kenagarian Kampa customary community.
Starting with 100 coffee seedlings
On 24 September 2026, Yayasan Gambut handed over 100 Liberica coffee seedlings to LPHA Ghimbo Pamoan. The seedlings were then planted together in a prepared area, with five LPHA committee members participating: four men and one woman.
This planting marked the first stage of a plan to establish 1,000 Liberica coffee seedlings. Development is planned in stages, taking account of site readiness, seedling availability, management capacity and maintenance needs.
Monitoring plants and preparing the nursery
The 5 October visit began with monitoring the coffee planted in September to observe its early condition after planting.
The team then visited the nursery to inspect the facilities and discuss repairs. The nursery is intended to be brought back into use for germinating seeds and raising Liberica coffee seedlings.
Discussions with LPHA and the nursery social forestry business group (KUPS) also covered plans and methods for group-led seed propagation. Four LPHA committee members attended this follow-up activity.
To support these preparations, Yayasan Gambut provided 1,000 nursery bags, one roll of shade netting and 1,000 coffee seeds, along with funding for propagation activities. These seeds are intended for the next nursery cycle; they are not additional seedlings already planted in the field.
Supporting community management
Planting, monitoring and nursery preparations form part of ongoing support for Liberica coffee development with the customary forest management group. Involving committee members from the outset is intended to support continued plant care and management.
Liberica coffee development is expected to offer a potential long-term livelihood option alongside efforts to maintain the ecological functions and social and cultural values of Ghimbo Pamoan Customary Forest.
