Riau's Tree Adoption Programme
A programme initiated by Riau's Environment and Forestry Office connects public support with community efforts to protect local trees.

The Riau Provincial Government, through its Environment and Forestry Office (DLHK), initiated a tree adoption programme to encourage communities to protect trees where they live and receive incentives. Public donations are channelled directly to the Indigenous or local communities concerned, without deductions for programme management.

Funds are allocated to social purposes (15%, including support for people in poverty, social assistance and village development), forest development (15%, including planning, research and management), forest conservation (30%, including regular patrols), and operations (40%, including administration, logistics and meals for field teams).
Since its launch in August, the programme had raised more than Rp 2 billion from various contributors. The management team had identified 10,613 trees. Adoption contributions were set at Rp 200 thousand per mature tree per year and Rp 50,000 per young tree or newly planted tree per year.

“Because all funds raised are allocated directly to communities, financing programme management and expansion is a challenge. To address the costs of tree inventories, support for recipient forest community groups, applied research, monitoring and evaluation, Kawali Riau will develop alternative funding strategies with Yayasan Gambut and other NGOs in Riau as we work towards a Green Riau,” explained Fadil Nandila, Director of Kawali Riau and Secretary of Yayasan Adopsi Pohon, to Yayasan Gambut on Friday, 24 September 2021.
