Wet landscapes

Peatlands and Fire Resilience

Combining forest and land fire prevention and preparedness with peatland restoration, cross-village coordination, and field data.

Keeping peatlands wet

This program aims to reduce forest and land fire risk, maintain peatland conditions, and support the recovery of hydrological and ecological functions through community action and landscape-level coordination.

Focus areas

  • Risk information and early warning based on fire weather, hotspots, and field observations.
  • Community prevention and preparedness, including zero-burning land management.
  • Site-appropriate water management, rewetting, and rehabilitation.
  • Field monitoring, cross-village learning, and multi-stakeholder coordination.

How we work and what we track

Analysis combines fire-weather information, hotspot data, land-cover information, and field reports. Hotspots are treated as indications that require interpretation and, where possible, field verification—not as proof of fire on their own. Results tracked include risk levels, field-verification findings, prevention and restoration actions, the condition of water-management and early-warning infrastructure, fire incidents, and estimated affected areas where data and methods allow.

Examples from Yayasan Gambut

Examples include zero-burning land management in Penampi, canal blocking and fire-risk warning support in Temiang and Tanjung Kuras, and fire-weather and hotspot information delivered through the YG GeoPortal.
